As we navigate the 2020–21 school year together, the health and safety of our students, families and staff are our top priorities. In accordance with guidance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) we will be updating this post with any confirmed or probable school-associated COVID-19 cases in the district within 24 hours or being informed by the local Health Department.

The district was notified of several School Associated Cases of COVID-19 within our school community on Friday, May 21st, 2021. A “School Associated Case” means a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19 amongst students, teachers, staff members, coaches, volunteers, or any other person who was present on school property, or at a school function under circumstances that may result in the transmission or contraction of COVID-19 during an infectious period.
- Location/Department: Battle Creek Central High School
- Number of positive/presumed positive individuals: 1

Actions being taken: As always, we cannot share any specific or identifying health-related information about students or staff members. However, we can share that as a result of this case, no close contacts were identified within the school community and the district is taking the following actions:
- Following the Health Department’s contact tracing protocol, no individuals were identified as close contacts. The affected individuals will be required to quarantine at home until a 10 to 14-day period has passed from the time of potential exposure.
- Any potentially affected areas have undergone enhanced sanitation protocols as guided by the Health Department and CDC Guidelines in accordance with our Preparedness and Response Plan. Any individuals identified as close contacts have been contacted directly by the district or the County Health Department and will need to quarantine at home for at least a 14-day period from the time of exposure. The health department has a robust process in place to determine which students and staff require contact and removal from the workplace or school. If you do not receive communication from the health department or school district, you are not impacted. No further action is required and you do not need to contact the school.

This public notice is being provided in accordance with MDHHS Emergency Order Under MCL 333.2253 – Reporting of Confirmed and Probable Cases of COVID-19 at Schools. Since August 26, 2020, the district has been notified of and has responded to 146 School Associated Cases. For a count of the School Associated Cases by building and program, please refer to the table below. Families with questions should reach out to their student’s school office and BCPS staff members with questions can reach out to the Human Resources office.

Persons who have been identified as close contacts to this School Associated Case have been informed directly by the Calhoun County Public Health Department or the school district.
If you have not received communication from the health department or school district, you are not impacted. No further action is required and you do not need to contact the school.
