Read more, score more, win more
We are excited to launch a new districtwide Reading Challenge for students in grades K–8. This challenge is designed to motivate students to read more and celebrate their effort, growth, and consistency as readers.
During the challenge, students earn prizes and recognition based on their reading. The more they read, the more they earn.
How students earn points
Students read books and then take an Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz at school. AR is the program students use to take a short quiz on books they have read to earn points. It is a fun and positive way to build strong reading habits and celebrate persistence, progress, and a love of books. Even 15 to 20 minutes of daily reading supports steady growth.
We want to celebrate the work students are already doing. We created a Student Roadmap to show students what they can win.
Many students have already earned points this year, so they are not starting at the bottom. They might already be close to a prize. At 10 points they unlock a Treasure Chest prize. If they keep climbing to 500 points, they can win the Grand Prize.
Timeline: The Reading Challenge runs through the end of the school year.
Prize delivery: Prizes will be delivered in students’ school buildings.
Reward tiers
- 10 Points: Treasure Chest Prize
- 25 Points: Treasure Chest Prize (x3) and Book
- 50 Points: School Swag Store Item
- 100 Points: Movie Theater Trip
- 250 Points: $25 Book Trip
- 500 Points: Grand Prize (Meta Quest)
How families can help at home
Families play a powerful role in helping children succeed as readers. We encourage you to:
- Set aside a daily reading time
- Talk with your child about what they are reading
- Visit the library or explore books that match their interests
- Celebrate effort, not just minutes or levels
If your child wants or needs more books to read at home, please contact your school. We will help.
Why is literacy important?
Reading is one of the most important skills for a successful life. It is about more than English class. We want our students to be able to read a lease, apply for a job, and understand the world around them. Strong readers become strong leaders.
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a tool we use to track reading practice. It is not a curriculum or a test. Think of it like a fitness tracker for books. It helps us see if a student read a book and understood it, and it helps us match students with books that are a good fit.
What is the science behind it?
Reading is a muscle. The only way to build that muscle is to use it. Consistent reading practice supports growth across subjects, including math and science.
