Financial Aid

At first glance financial aid for college can seem scary, but really it shouldn’t be.

Some things you have to know:

All federal aid requires timely filing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For Michigan high school students who are planning to enter college the following fall, timely filing should be considered February 28th of the senior year. While applications are accepted after that date, as aid is awarded, qualified students may loose out on programs for which they qualify if the awards are all distributed before an application is received.

There are two ways to file, electronically or paper forms. Copies of the worksheets for electronic filers are available in the counseling center as well as on-line. Paper copies of the FASFA are also available around mid-Decemeber for those who would rather file by mail. Electronic filers will also need to request a personal identification number (PIN) from the department of education to be able to electronically sign their applications. For those who file by paper a pin may also be useful to update information, look at loan history, and exchange information with the Department of Education in the future. We recommend that you request a PIN early, by December 1st, so that you can go about filing electronically without waiting. You can go directly to the FASFA site for more information and to request a PIN by following this link:

In addition to the FAFSA, some colleges require filing a CSS Financial Aid Profile. Find out if the schools you are interested in require it before spending money to have CSS develop a profile. You can learn more about the CSS Profile by following this link:
